Who are the Knights of St. Columba?

The Knights of St Columba is an Order of Catholic laymen, open to all practising Catholic men over the age of 16.

Who are the Knights of St. Columba?

The organisation, which is non-political, exists to support the mission of the Catholic Church by undertaking Catholic Action and Charitable and Benevolent work under the general direction of the Hierarchy.

The Knights’ motto is “Serving God by Serving Others” and members of the Order strive to achieve their aims through the fundamental virtues of charity, unity and fraternity.

The Order was founded in the UK in 1919 by Catholic Gentlemen in Glasgow and today has about eight thousand members organised into Provinces and Councils.

Details of the history of the Order and its current national and international activities can be seen on the Knights of Saint Columba official web site at www.ksc.org.uk

Leyland Council 323

At working level, the Knights of St. Columba operate as councils. Here in Leyland, our council is No. 323, and was inaugurated (ie received its charter) in 1938.

Over several decades, it’s supported financially and materially, the needs of poor families, sick individuals, prison inmates, pilgrims, and local charities of differing religious persuasions.

Council Meetings

Meetings of Council 323 Leyland of the Knights of St Columba are held on the second Monday of each month at 7.15pm in St. Mary’s Community Centre, Broadfield Walk, Leyland PR25 1PD.

A dramatic end to a week in Yarl’s Wood

A quote from our church newsletter at the time of the Singo family’s detainment in Yarl’s Wood detention centre pending deportation in June 2009.

“The PPC and the monks think that it is our Christian duty to support them in their hour of need, and we know how many of you are concerned for them. There will be fund-raising events happening. As usual this Sunday we will attempt to talk to them through the computer.”

Thankfully, our Lord blessed this family with all the help theyy needed to stay in the UK, become permanent residents and members of our congregation.
