Welcome to the Roman Catholic parish of St Mary, Leyland

The parish was founded by the Benedictine monks of Ampleforth Abbey in 1845, and the original church was on Worden Lane. Ampleforth Abbey served the parish until 2022 when it was handed over to the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

The new church’s significant size, landmark features and stunning architectural detail are clear to see, and the building’s superb quality, craftsmanship, and architectural vision, make it one of the most beautiful modern Roman Catholic churches in England. Consecrated on 4th April 1964, it continues to offer a place of rest, beauty and grandeur to all who pass through its doors. May you find your visit here warm and welcoming, spiritual and nourishing, memorable and significant.

We are a lively, welcoming, inclusive, and diverse parish, and we hope that you will feel at home and spiritually nourished, especially through the celebration of Holy Mass. Whether you are a practising Catholic, someone searching for faith, or have decided to return to the faith after some time away, you are very welcome.

May God bless you and your families.
