OUR VALUES >

The Parish values which we as parishioners uphold should be based on the Word of God, the teachings of the Church and our Ampleforth Benedictine heritage. Specifically, we should be a community :

  • in which prayer and worship are at the centre of our lives,
  • which is welcoming and open to all,
  • which is forgiving and is not judgemental
  • which is open to change, led by the Holy Spirit,
  • in which we all share responsibility for the mission of the church,
  • in which we each use our gifts for the benefit of everyone,
  • in which the spirit and joy of the Good News is visibly present in all our actions,
  • in which we respect and value each individual,
  • in which we foster the unity of the Christian churches and the building of good relations with people of other faiths.

    MONEY FOR HAITI:

Money for Haiti will be sent to the Community we mentioned orally last week. We have some news from those who live there, 6 days after the earthquake struck. "Wilfrid Joachin (co-ordinator of the Focolare movement in Haiti) told us that two of the Focolare community studying in Port-au-Prince survived the devastating earthquake: almost every family has lost one or more of their members in the earthquake because many people from the villages re-locate to the capital Port-au-Prince either for studies or for work. A family in Carice lost 7 of their 8 children. At this moment, because of the destruction in Port-au-Prince, everybody is leaving for the countryside out of the city…many people from the capital have arrived in Ounaminthe [a city in the North-East situated at the border with the Dominican Republic]. They arrive with nothing having lost all they had in Port-au-Prince, not knowing where to go and not having eaten for several days, begging for food and lodging. It is the same story in other cities like Mont-Organisé, Savanette, Carice. The whole country is devastated, crushed to the ground by this great disaster. We just can’t sit here doing nothing so we came up with the idea of building a centre for poor families." Some years back the Focolare Movement in Haiti was given a piece of land. Wilfrid Joachin and the other members are now developing a building plan which will provide housing for twenty families. In the meantime, a distribution centre for clothing, food and medical help has been set up near a hospital in Mount-Organisé. "We will look after these families", said Wilfrid Joachim, "even if we have hardly anything ourselves." Our money will go to this group of people directly and we will hear how it progresses.

    POVERTY HOMELESSNESS ACTION WEEK:

Poverty Homelessness Action Week  - The theme this year is "Enough for All". As our little contribution to this campaign we will donate the proceeds of 9.30am coffee next Sunday 7th February. THE DRAMA GROUP:

The Panto "Bah Humbug" was great fun, and the hard work of the last months has been richly rewarded.  Well done all involved and for those who attended: money yet to be counted will go to Haiti. Was it a cast of thirty one, never mind those back stage?

    WORD OF LIFE:

I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved,

and will come in and go out and find pasture (Jn 10:9)

Jesus presents himself as the one who fulfils the divine promises and the expectations of a people whose history is marked by its covenant, which has never been cancelled, with its God. The idea of the gate is both like and explained clearly by another image that Jesus used: "I am the way . . . no one comes to the Father except through me" (see Jn 14:6). Therefore he is truly a path and an open gate leading to the Father, to God himself.

Full text of the Word of Life and the Feb. one are available on the

cupboards just outside the piety Shop. Please help yourself.
