OUR VALUES >

The Parish values which we as parishioners uphold should be based on the Word of God, the teachings of the Church and our Ampleforth Benedictine heritage. Specifically, we should be a community :

  • in which prayer and worship are at the centre of our lives,
  • which is welcoming and open to all,
  • which is forgiving and is not judgemental
  • which is open to change, led by the Holy Spirit,
  • in which we all share responsibility for the mission of the church,
  • in which we each use our gifts for the benefit of everyone,
  • in which the spirit and joy of the Good News is visibly present in all our actions,
  • in which we respect and value each individual,
  • in which we foster the unity of the Christian churches and the building of good relations with people of other faiths.

Thank You – St. Mary Cairns:

Thank you from Sr Mary Cairns – I am the niece of Sr Mary Cairns, formerly of St Catherine’s Convent, Moss Lane, Leyland, who has requested that I write to pass on her thanks to all the parishioners of St Mary’s for sending cards and gifts to her on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee and her birthday. My aunt is unable to write personally to thank everyone due to her poor health and eyesight, but she sends her love and prayers to everyone. Rosemary Cairns

    Francis Clark ( Recently Deceased):

"Dear Parishioners, as many of you will know, Francis Clark died on 24th October and his funeral was held in the parish on 5th November. As his sister-in-law, I write on behalf of the extended Clark family. Francis grew up and went to school in Ealing, attending St. Benedict's school with his two elder brothers (and also my brothers). Unfortunately, both his brothers pre-deceased him and when his parents also died, Francis decided to move away from Ealing and start life in a fresh place. After many false-starts, he finally found a new home in Leyland and at St. Mary's in particular. I don't think it is a coincidence that he arrived at another Benedictine parish and his choice has proved to be the right one. I am told that he was very popular and much-loved.   Indeed, he seemed to have found a second family. The Clark family would like to extend their gratitude to all who knew him for the warmth, kindness and love shown to Francis during his time amongst you. It is a great solace to know that his last years were such happy ones. May God bless you. Mary Clark"

    WORD OF LIFE:

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle

than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. (MT 19:24)

So what is Jesus condemning? Certainly not the goods of this earth in themselves, but the rich person who is attached to them. And why is that? The answer is clear: it is because all things belong to God, while the rich behave as if all things belong to them. The fact is that riches can easily take the place of God in the human heart. They blind the vision and make it easier for all sorts of vices to take root. The Apostle Paul wrote: "Those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. Copies available from the table in front of the Piety shop.
