OUR VALUES >

The Parish values which we as parishioners uphold should be based on the Word of God, the teachings of the Church and our Ampleforth Benedictine heritage. Specifically, we should be a community :

  • in which prayer and worship are at the centre of our lives,
  • which is welcoming and open to all,
  • which is forgiving and is not judgemental
  • which is open to change, led by the Holy Spirit,
  • in which we all share responsibility for the mission of the church,
  • in which we each use our gifts for the benefit of everyone,
  • in which the spirit and joy of the Good News is visibly present in all our actions,
  • in which we respect and value each individual,
  • in which we foster the unity of the Christian churches and the building of good relations with people of other faiths.

Re Francis Clark - Recently Deceased:

Mary Clark, sister in law of Francis Clark, writes about Francis Clark who died on 24th October

    "Dear Parishioners,

As many of you will know, Francis Clark died on 24th October and his funeral will be held in the parish on 5th November. As his sister-in-law, I write on behalf of the extended Clark family.
Francis grew up and went to school in Ealing, attending St. Benedict's school with his two elder brothers (and also my brothers). Unfortunately, both his brothers pre-deceased him and when his parents also died, Francis decided to move away from Ealing and start life in a fresh place.
After many false-starts, he finally found a new home in Leyland and at St.
Mary's in particular. I don't think it is a coincidence that he arrivedatanother Benedictine parish and his choice has proved to be the right one. I am told that he was very popular and much-loved.  Indeed, he seemed to have found a second family.
The Clark family would like to extend their gratitude to all who knew him for the warmth, kindness and love shown to Francis during his time amongst you. It is a great solace to know that his last years were such happy ones.
              May God bless you.

      Mary Clark "

    WORD OF LIFE:

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone

who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. (MT 19:24)

Do you find this sentence striking? I think you’re right to be a bit bewildered and wonder what you should do. Jesus never spoke just for the sake of it. So we have to take these words seriously, without wanting to water them down. Let’s try to understand what they really mean from Jesus himself, from how he behaved towards the rich. He also mixed with well-off people. To Zacchaeus, who had given away only half of his possessions, he said, "Today salvation has come to this house." Furthermore, the Acts of the Apostles show us that in the early Church the practice of holding goods in common was done freely, so that materially renouncing all one’s possessions was not compulsory. Jesus therefore didn’t think of founding only a community of people called to follow him by. . . leaving behind all their wealth.
