OUR VALUES >

The Parish values which we as parishioners uphold should be based on the Word of God, the teachings of the Church and our Ampleforth Benedictine heritage. Specifically, we should be a community :

  • in which prayer and worship are at the centre of our lives,
  • which is welcoming and open to all,
  • which is forgiving and is not judgemental
  • which is open to change, led by the Holy Spirit,
  • in which we all share responsibility for the mission of the church,
  • in which we each use our gifts for the benefit of everyone,
  • in which the spirit and joy of the Good News is visibly present in all our actions,
  • in which we respect and value each individual,
  • in which we foster the unity of the Christian churches and the building of good relations with people of other faiths.

    ‘Operation Christmas Child’:

The Youth Group are mobilising themselves to collect shoe boxes full of gifts for children across the world less fortunate than ourselves. Because of the logistical planning, we need to be in a position to have the boxes collected from church on the Monday following our presentation at mass on Sunday 22nd November. We would like to ask for the help of parishioners to:-

    a) Donate prizes for our raffle which will be held after 9.30am Mass on 4th October, 11th October and 18th October.

    b). Buy raffle tickets please.

c). Put together a shoe box for a child (girl or boy – under 10yrs or 11-15yrs). Wrap it in Christmas paper (get a leaflet for guidance).

If you can’t manage to do a box on your own, why not do a ‘family contribution’, or do one with a friend. With each completed shoe box the Christmas Child organisers have requested that a donation should be included towards the cost of transporting the boxes across the world. If you have any queries please contact Steve Mc Bride on 07977249636. (Many thanks from all at St. Mary’s Youth Group)

    WORD OF LIFE

By standing firm you will win true life for yourselves (Luke 21:19)

‘Standing firm’. The original Greek word from which these words are derived is rich in content: it means patience, constancy, resistance, trust. Standing firm is necessary and indispensable when we suffer, when tempted, when prone to discouragement, when enticed by the seductive pleasures of the world and when experiencing persecution. I expect that you too have found yourself in at least one of these situations and have experienced that, without standing firm, you would have succumbed. Perhaps you have sometimes given in. Maybe now, at this very moment, you find yourself immersed in one of these painful situations. So what should you do? Start again and . . . stand firm. Otherwise the name ‘Christian’ is not suitable for you.

Copies available in church in front of the Piety Shop
