OUR VALUES >

The Parish values which we as parishioners uphold should be based on the Word of God, the teachings of the Church and our Ampleforth Benedictine heritage. Specifically, we should be a community :

  • in which prayer and worship are at the centre of our lives,
  • which is welcoming and open to all,
  • which is forgiving and is not judgemental
  • which is open to change, led by the Holy Spirit,
  • in which we all share responsibility for the mission of the church,
  • in which we each use our gifts for the benefit of everyone,
  • in which the spirit and joy of the Good News is visibly present in all our actions,
  • in which we respect and value each individual,
  • in which we foster the unity of the Christian churches and the building of good relations with people of other faiths.

    Hospitalised? Keeping Us Informed:

Please remember to let us know in the Priory house if you yourself, a relative or friend are in hospital or temporarily housebound. Then we can try and visit or arrange Holy Communion if needed. Unfortunately our crystal ball has a tendency to be a little cloudy!! Most importantly, if you are in hospital you need to tell the nurses that you would like to receive Holy Communion. They cannot ask you!!

    Keeping Warm in Church:

Keeping warm in Church – we never seem to be able to heat the Church sufficiently especially during the coldest weather. A possible solution would be to purchase a number of long, warm cloaks which we would keep in the Church and hand out to all who feel the cold. We need to know how many are likely to make use of them. If you would like to use one, please put a tick on the red sheet provided in the Narthex.

    Thank You!

    (1) HCPT Group 56 thanks all who attended the table top sale on Saturday. £286 was raised which will help to fund a child for Lourdes next Easter.

    (2) Grace Derry (9) thanks all who sponsored her cycle ride from Manchester to Blackpool - she raised a fantastic £250 which has been divided between Christies Hospital and the Scout Group. Thank you for all your support.

    (3) Great North Run – Tim Sullivan thanks everyone who supported him, both through donations and prayers, for his run. He raised £650 for CAFOD. Please hand in sponsor money as soon as is convenient so we can get it off to Cafod.

    (4) Garden Party - All of us thank all who made it such a great day and to God who gave us his sunshine. There was hard work and good fun! Our thanks to the musicians, the stall holders, those who prepared so hard, the providers of refreshments, those who came along and anyone we have forgotten!

Drama – ‘Bah Humbug’ – Actors Needed:

Needed for the Drama Production of ‘Bah Humbug’ – the Drama Group are looking for 2 males to participate in the Drama Group pantomime being performed on 28, 29 and 30 January 2010. We need someone to play Scrooge (large part) and Mr Fezziwig (small part) and to be available to rehearse on Thursday nights and possible Sundays. Please contact Catherine Sullivan on 07866741734.

    Bible Alive – October:

Bible Alive for October is now ready to be collected for those who subscribe to it.

    Operation Christmas Child:

I know it still nearly 3 months until Christmas, but the Youth Group are mobilising themselves to collect show boxes full of gifts for children across the world less fortunate than ourselves. Because of the logistical planning, we need to be in a position to have the boxes collected from church on the Monday following our presentation at Mass on Sunday 22nd November. We would like to ask for the help of parishioners to:-

    a) Donate prizes for our raffle which will be held after 9.30am Mass on 4th October, 11th October and 18th October.

    b) Buy raffle tickets please.

    c) Put together a shoe box for a child (girl or boy – under 10yrs or 11-15yrs). Wrap it in Christmas paper (get a leaflet for guidance).

If you can’t manage to do a box on your own, why not do a ‘family contribution’, or do one with a friend. With each completed shoe box the Christmas Child organisers have requested that a donation should be included towards the cost of transporting the boxes across the world. If you have any queries please contact Steve Mc Bride on 07977249636. Many thanks from all at St Mary’s Youth Group.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY – FORTHCOMING EVENTS

CAFOD Harvest Fast Day – 2 October 2009

CAFOD Harvest Fast Day: 2 October 2009 This Harvest, CAFOD is appealing for our urgent help to support millions of people who are being pushed deeper and deeper into poverty. The World Bank estimates that the financial crisis will force 46 million more people to survive on less than $1.25 a day. The human cost of this crisis is immense. Across the world, children as young as six are leaving school to look for work. Families are surviving on one or two basic meals a day, and healthcare has become a luxury that few can afford. Just two years ago, 37 year old Margaret from Kenya had a decent job and home. Now she lives in a one room shack and often goes hungry so her children can eat. Like so many others, Margaret spent years working her way out of poverty. But world problems, including the financial crisis, have knocked her down again. Find out how you can help people like Margaret in CAFOD’s Fast Day leaflet. Envelopes will be available in Church this week. Don’t forget to fill in your Gift Aid details

    WORD OF LIFE

Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and all these things shall be added to you (Mt 6:33)

A utopia? Unrealisable for you, a modern person, nowadays, in an industrialised world, where competition rules and there is often economic crisis? I would just remind you how tough in reality it was for the people of Galilee to find enough to live on, difficulties that were no less when Jesus spoke these words. It’s not a question of whether or not it’s a utopia. Jesus is putting before you the basic setup for your life: either you live for yourself or you live for God.
